EDUKASI MELALUI DEMONSTRASI PERAWATAN TALI PUSAT DAN SOSIALISASI BUKU SAKU PERAWATAN TALI PUSAT PADA BAYI BARU LAHIRDI DESA MADU SARI

Abstract

Caring for the umbilical cord until it is severed after the baby is born is the definition of cord care. Errors in cord care techniques can affect the length of cord detachment and tetanus neonatorum infection (Maryunani, 2018), In order to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of reducing infant mortality by 12 per 10,000 live births by 2030. With one of them reducing the rate of infection. Data (WHO, 2023) in 2018 about 2,500 newborns died from tetanus. While in Indonesia the Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) in 2022 was 0.51 per live birth (Directorate of Nutrition and Maternal and Child Health, 2022), one of the causes is due to tetanus infection (Kemenkes, 2022), research shows that 33% of neonatal tetanus cases are followed by omphalitis and sepsis (Blencowe et al., 2011). Omphalitis is a localised disease that affects neonates.  So it is necessary to take care of the umbilical cord properly (Steer, 2020).

The purpose of this community service is to improve the health status of newborns in terms of cord care and increase knowledge of how to care for umbilical cord openly, sterile gauze and topical breast milk. The method used to achieve the objectives through Action research, with a participatory programme approach in the form of education through demonstrations to cadres and third trimester pregnant women and mothers who have babies aged 0-7 days in Madu Sari Village.

The method of open cord care is 3 babies, and closed (sterile gauze) 6 babies while the cord care using topical breast milk is only 1 baby. The length of open cord care release was 4-5 days, and closed care (sterile gauze) averaged 1 week while topical breast milk was used for 3 days. There were no signs of cord infection in all infants.
